Abstract: In 2006, the Persons with Disability Act (Act 715) was passed, this made it mandatory for all public places to be accessible to the disabled in Ghana. Notwithstanding this provision, most buildings remain disability unfriendly. The passage of Act 715 has made it mandatory for buildings (including those in tertiary institutions) to be accessible by the disabled in the institution. Persons with Disability (PWDs) in tertiary institutions still face the challenges in accessing lecture theatres and other academic buildings. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the extent to which buildings in tertiary institutions are accessible to PWDs after the passage of Act 715 with particular emphasis on the mobility impaired at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi campus. This study adopted the purposive sampling method which is a non-probability approach in selecting respondents to the questionnaires and interviewees. The result showed that the general accessibility of buildings is below the acceptable standard requirements for an accessible built environment for the mobility impaired. KNUST has no policies in place to ensure the provision of an accessible environment for PWDs, the current situation has not adversely affected the way of life of PWDs except for academics and also some loopholes were found in the implementation of the various legislations concerning PWDs. The tool for implementation of the provisions of the Act at the national level is also not effective. We conclude that management of the university should ensure strict compliance of provisions of the Act 715 to ensure that PWDs have barrier free academic environment.
