|Abstract: ||This paper uses exploratory research to examine practical and sustainable measures that can be adapted in building urban resilience to flooding in Africa’s infrastructure development with emphasis on Accra, Ghana. According to diverse research bodies including the United Nations, at least 70% of the world’s population will be inhabiting urban areas by the year 2050. Africa having the highest urbanization rate, accounts for about half of 900 million urban dwellers. In Ghana, the development of the Structural Adjustment Plan (SAP) led to a large increase in Accra’s infrastructure development thus putting intense pressure on existing urban infrastructure leading to flooding which has become an annual major cause of destruction to lives and property. Over the years, flood control and management practices such as the building of dams and channelization and draining of chocked drains have been used as a control measure to curb flooding in Accra but the theory of urban resilience to flooding should offer a plausible addition on alternate sustainable course of action to combat flooding. Urban resilience to flooding is simply a city’s propensity to withstand flooding to avoid extreme physical damage to life and property. This paper contributes to flood adaption techniques and practices which could be considered in replacement of flood control and flood management measures to curb flooding in the development of Ghana and
Africa’s urban infrastructure.|
