|Abstract: ||Sawing characteristics and lumber yields from Anogeisusleiocarpus (Kane) and Khaya. senegalensis (Khaya) have been studied using the Woodmizer which uses horizontal bandsaw.
The results have shown that wood from both species are hard but easy to saw with sharp saw blades. Kane, however, slightly blunts saw blades. Mean lumber yields from both species seem very high and not significantly different (p=0.0S). Log positions in Kane have been found to be significant with respect to lumber yield (p=0.05), with
the log next to the burr log generating the highest lumber yield and the butt log generating the lowest. Log positions in Khaya are, however, not significant with respect to lumber yield' (p=0.05). Through and through sawing pattern has also been found to generate significantly higher yield than cant sawing in Kane but nor in Khaya.
The differences in lumber yields from different logs of a particular tree of Kane may be due to the presence of buttresses in butt logs and toper in the top logs. The seemingly higher mean lumber yields from the two species may also be due to effect of the suitable sawing patterns and sawing equipment used. The slight blunting of saw blades by fresh Kane wood may be due to the influence of the gummy substance present in the wood.
From sawing characteristics and lumber yield point of view. Kane and Khaya may be recommended for forest plantation establishments in the savannah region of Ghana.|
