Abstract: Telfairia occidentalis seeds Phytochemical analyses revealed both crude methanol and chloroform seed extracts to be rich in bioactive phytochemicals that includes tannins. Broth dilution assay on a panel of pathogenic microorganism revealed extraction solvent-specific differences in the efficacies of microbial growth inhibition with the methanol extract demonstrating a more potent anti-microbial response (relatively lower MICs within the range 195 µg/ml-780 µg/ml range). Total phenolic content and total antioxidant capacity were respectively higher in the methanol extracts (14.46 gGAE/100 g and 38.65 gAAE/100 g) than in the chloroform extracts (2.96 gGAE/100 g and 16.96 gAAE/100 g). The methanol extract also exhibited a more potent antioxidant potential than the chloroform extract as shown in the DPPH and in the H2O2 scavenging assays (IC50 values of 96.0 µg/ml and 287.5 µg/ml respectively). Although both extracts displayed dose-dependent anti-inflammatory activities on carrageenan-induced chick foot-oedema, the methanol extract elicited more potent anti-inflammatory activities on a comparable scale to that of standard drugs dexamethasone and diclofenac. The data lends compelling credence to the continuing efficacious use of the aqueous infusion of the seeds of Telfairia occidentalis for prophylaxis and therapy.
