Abstract: In the Boltzmann transport equation, the one – particle velocity distribution function for a dilute gas is expanded in terms of the Burnett basis functions. The function is considered close to the equilibrium distribution function – the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution- such as to linearize the equation. The conservation of linear momentum, the properties of spherical harmonics, and the Wigner-Eckart theorem are used to simplify the matrix elements of the linearised collision operator to give the reduced matrix elements. The coefficients of these reduced matrix elements are calculated in detail using transformations of the generalized hypergeometric series. These matrix elements of the linearized operator are usually required in the calculation of transport coefficients in Boltzmann transport theory.
