Title: Safety management on marine projects: A case study of Takoradi port expansion project.

Abstract: The purpose of maritime transport is to encourage shipping by providing opportunities through which large quantities of goods or freight can be transferred from one geographic region to another through sea. Transport plays a crucial role in any nation's financial and socio-cultural development. The aim of the study is to evaluate safety management practices on marine projects at Takoradi Ports. In the bid to achieve the stated aim, these objectives were set: to the determine the critical safety hazards on the Takoradi Harbour Port expansion project, to assess safety planning on the port expansion project, to assess safety assurance on the port expansion project and to assess safety control on the Takoradi Harbour Port expansion project. The aforementioned objectives were subjected to rigorous and extant literature review. Based on the nature of the study, quantitative research method was adopted to achieve the objectives of the study. Data collection was by questionnaire through the various respondents that are involve in the Takoradi harbour port expansion project. The were 42 respondents to this study. The data collected was fed into Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software and the analytical tool used was inferential statistical instruments which was to analyse the variables. The major findings of the study with respect to safety and types of hazards were physical hazards, mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, psychological hazards, biological hazards and health hazards and the safety planning , safety assurance and safety control tools and techniques used in the Takoradi harbour ports expansion project are; (Cost of Safety (COS), Process Mapping, Cost Benefit Analyses,), (risk management, safety management processes, safety planning tools and techniques) and (Safety Hazard Risk Analyses, Accident Investigation) respectively. These recommendations were made: the attitude of adopting safety assurance tools such as risk management, safety management processes, safety planning tools and techniques must be encouraged so as to prevent or reduce hazards to the possible minimum in marine projects, Safety hazard control tools and techniques such as risk management, safety management processes, safety planning tools and techniques must be ensured in order to reduce or prevent the effects of hazards in marine projects and the types of hazards must be boldly indicated and explained to workers in marine projects specifically at the Takoradi harbour port project so as to reduce the effects of hazards in that sector.
