Abstract
The workplace environment is a major asset and has a great influence to the success of an
organization. It has a long-term effect on employee’s productivity and performance. The research
study seeks to assess the impact of the working environment of the Electricity Company of Ghana
on employee’s productivity within the Jomoro Municipality. Three objectives were set for this
work, which are (1) To identify workplace factors affecting employee’s productivity ; (2) To
explore the relationship between employees’ productivity and their work environment; (3) To
examine the influence of the physical work environment on employees ‘performance and
productivity. After review of the relevant literature, a descriptive survey research design was
adopted using quantitative methods. The study targeted eighty six (86) respondents by the use of
a structured questionnaire as a research instrument, but only eighty (80) respondents returned the
survey questionnaires, indicating a response rate of 93% per cent. Purposive sampling was used to
select the respondents for the study. Data analysis involved descriptive statistical tools,
frequencies, percentages and inferential statistics such as mean scores were determined through
the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) IBM version 23. Findings revealed that
employees’ performance was influenced by several physical workplace environmental factors such
as spatial layouts, lighting and noise levels. However the study also revealed that job aid and the
physical working environment are having a significance relationship towards employee’s
performance and productivity. The study recommends that ECG needs to put in place better reward
systems that motivate the employees to work better for increased productivity. It is therefore
important for management to ensure that the working environment and organizational culture are
good enough to ensure employee performance and productivity in the Company
