Title: Credit risk management practices of commercial banks in Ghana

Abstract: The study sought to examine the current practices of credit risk management by commercial banks in Ghana. A descriptive research design was used with a population that consisted of all the commercial banks in Ghana. The sampling frame obtained from the Bank of Ghana included 27 Banks. Stratified random sampling technique was used to select 23 respondents and a semi structured questionnaire administered to collect the data from the banks. The data was presented using frequency tables, charts and bar graphs. The study reveals that commercial banks in Ghana make use of credit risk management practices that includes; comprehensive credit evaluation, provision of collateral and examination the credit history of borrowers. Additionally, the banks use covenants, credit rationing, loan securitization, and loan syndication as credit risk management defensives. The variables that influence the effective management of risks by commercial banks in Ghana includes the provision of credit policy manual that dictates the allocation of loans, top management support, effective screening of potential borrowers, employing well trained credit personnel. The internal performance measures of bank lending used by commercial banks in Ghana include the Basel II criteria and bank profitability, including yield on investments, return on assets and return on equity.
