The abnormal increases in population growths especially in the less developed countries including Ghana, characterised by abnormally high rates of birth and maternal mortality, and associated feminine complicated issues, seriously demands the need for a specialised facility as an Obstetrics and Gynaecology Block in a Teaching Hospital as Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, to appropriately address these issues, thus enhancing the entire health delivery system of the country. The need for a facility as this arose some twenty years ago, when the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Development Board was commissioned to undertake a study leading to the proposal and design of specialised Obstetrics and Gynaecology Block to improve on the Health and Educational needs in this field of speciality of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. It is also for the same purpose that the Ministry of Health (Ghana) undertook an entire rehabilitation of the Korle-Bu Maternity Block just recently. It is the realisation of this need that as a contribution to the development of the national health delivery system, it has been chosen to compile, analyse and synthesise requisite background information and present a design proposal of such a facility for implementation as a design thesis for the Post-Graduate Diploma in Architecture. The procedure used for the thesis was first to present a general background of Obstetrics and Gynaecology issues in the country, focusing on Ashanti Region Feasibility studies were then undertaken to review Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and establish the need and viability of the project in the light of current economic, social and health conditions in Ghana. Certain disciplines were then selected as critical areas for a health delivery of this sort and comparative studies made on them.en_US
