- ItemApplication of decision support systems at the College level of the Finance Office of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi(2008) Agyei, Francis OsaeThe Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, in 2002 introduced the collegiate system that led to the grouping of academic departments into six colleges with enhanced autonomy for efficient and effective financial management and general administration. Consequently, the Finance Office set up a sub- office within each College to take care of the financial management at the College level. To ensure successful running of the decentralised offices, there is the need for an integrated information system that will ensure data integrity, consistency and reliability for decision making. There is the need to provide enough computers to the senior and junior staffs to avoid sharing of computer time in order to execute their work. Though the colleges are linked to the University’s network, they operate without access to the main Finance Office financial database for the purpose of decision making. The dependence on communication driven DSS (over 65.6%) mainly by using telephone for communication can be shifted to other means such as internet, chats, instant messaging and online collaboration in order to reduce the cost of conventional communication and improve information sharing for decision making. Furthermore, the over 81.3 % preference for document driven DSS leading to most of their operations being paper-based can be converted to data driven DSS to enhance online data sharing.
- ItemMicrocomputer and its uses as a tool for the entrepreneur(1996) Agyei, Francis Osae1.0 THE COMPUTER SYSTEM AS A WORKING TOOL : There is the need for everyone to know how to use the computer, not only for business purposes but, to be able to communicate with the computer if one is to be able to get through the rest of life. The future holds virtually endless opportunities for computers in most aspects (if not all) of human activities. The use of computers about four decades ago was mainly for military purposes. Three decades ago, it was the tool of large institutions and a decade ago a common business technology. Today, it has reached the ordinary man for computation and in games for the hobbyist. This proliferation is not just a consequence of growing acceptance, but primarily a result of enormous cost performance improvements, a trend that is likely to continue over the next century. Currently most business firms are using computers in the day- to-day running of their businesses and are also exchanging information or making enquiries via the computer network (INTERNET). A recent development is the fast growing INTERNET, which is a global computer-to-computer connections covering most countries the world over. It has become possible for a businessman to sit in his office and access information relating to his field or area of operation without necessarily having to travel for the same information.
