An evaluation of the performance parameters of the main ventilation system at Barnex (Prestea) Limited
    (1997) Ashun, Isaac
The evaluation of the performance parameters of the main ventilation system of an operating mine to ascertain the quality of the underground ambient environment is very essential both for the preservation of human life and machinery, necessary for the conduct of underground operations. This is because poor underground working conditions affect both the mine production and health of the mine worker. A good ventilation design, optimisation and implementation are thus essential for efficient mine operation since it will offer flexibility to production and meet the needs of the long-term operations of the mine. This report studies the main ventilation system of Barnex (Prestea) Limited and evaluates the mine ambient environmental conditions (performance parameters) to verify whether they meet acceptable standards. The assessment of the air quantity distribution efficiency and ambient environmental conditions was done using ventilation surveys and heat stress indices. The results from the study and assessment of the mine ambient environmental conditions collectively point to the fact that the underground conditions at Barnex (Prestea) Limited do not generally conform to standards, especially as one goes from the upper levels to the lower levels.
