    Sawdust Briquetting Plant
    (1988-04-16) Bortei, Henry Afutu
There are about seventy three registered sawmills currently in operation in the country which together generated over 220,000 cubic metres (65,000 tonnes) of sawdust in 1986. Currently over ninety percent of the sawdust generated in the country in unutilized. Sawmills in Kumasi account for sixty three percent of the total sawdust produced in the country. Disposal of the large volumes of sawdust produced in Kumasi is a problem to both sawmillers and the city council as well. The situation has lead to a serious environmental problem. The object of this investigation was to find method for profitable disposal of large amounts of sawdust from the sawmills of Kumasi. As a result of this investigation a process has been developed for the manufacture of high grade fuel briquette. The feasibility of the production and marketing of briquette in Kumasi is highlighted. The, optimum conditions of carrying out the various steps in the process have been determined and a study made of cost of plant and operation for fifteen thousand bundles of briquette per day.
