- ItemProposal for an effective wastewater disposal system for Jak City in Cotonou (Benin Republic)(2002-12-11) Hounkpe, Sena PeaceThis study proposes an effective wastewater management system for JAK city of Cotonou (Benin Republic). The city has a population of 1355 persons. It is a high income area with income greater than $3500 per household per year. The average household size is estimated at 5 persons. The current wastewater management technologies are septic tank plus soakaway pits for effluent disposal (about 97%) and vault systems (3%). Due to the high groundwater table, the surface area occupied by such systems is large, 8 to 15% of the plot size; 69% of households have a desludging frequency of less than 1 year due to the shallow depth of the facilities and the low level of infiltration of the wastewater into the surrounding soil. The average desludging cost per year per household is $ 122, 22. The present project proposes to eliminate the soakaway pits in order to prevent pollution of groundwater due to infiltration of wastewater, and to discharge the effluent of the tanks via a 50mm diameter PVC pipes into a 100mm diameter PVC pipe which run along the plots. The wastewater will be treated using one facultative pond followed by a maturation pond. The Capital investment cost is estimated at $94, 196.7.The operation and maintenance cost of the system is estimated at $40.9 per household per year. The average incremental cost per household per year is $82, 69. Besides the environmental benefit of tile project, the research has shown that there is a great reduction in cost compared to the existing sanitation systems. The project is viable; hence the government should find a way to support its implementation financially.
