Environmental Impact of Nsemmere Quarry Activities
    (2003) Yankson, Dieu Donne Tayi
The activities of quarrying involve drilling and blasting, loading and hauling, crushing and screening. The impact of these activities are dust pollution, noise, ground vibration air blast, fly rock and occupational hazards. The study focused on the environmental impact of quarrying activities on the communities near Nsemmere Quarry located in the Wenchi District of the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana. Site measurements and data collected at the quarry established that the operations impact on the environment particularly in the form of ground vibration, fly rock and dust pollution. It was found out that silicosis was an occupational disease at the quarry. Recommendations were made in respect of the use of an effective dust suppression system, the use of non-electric initiation system to reduce ground vibration and the need for the Environmental Protection Agency to do regular monitoring.
