Also blood pressure, body mass index and ophthalmologic examination for retinopathy were done on the patients. These were about 152 previously diagnosed diabetic patients (both type I and type II) who attend Diabetic Clinic at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi. The controls for this study were made up of 111 healthy adults. The prevalence of hypertension among the diabetic patients was 37%. About 5.2% was found to have diabetic retinopathy. Dyslipidaemia was also encountered. 14.5% had raised total cholesterol, 12% had raised triglycerides. Abnormalities of HDL and LDL were common. 73% had low HDL whilst 34% had high LDL. These results have implications for future cardiovascular risk in Ghanaian diabetic patients.
