dc.description.abstract | This thesis extensively discusses the results of Chichinisky[2] and Eckmann[4] in a self-contained way through the use of spaces of n - mean, groups with means and H-space The main goal of this thesis is to show that 1. If a space P which is a finite polyhedral or C W-complex has an n-mean (choice function) for some n £ 2 then P is contractible. 2. If a non-contractible space P has an n-mean (choice function) for all n £ 2, then P is homotopy equivalent to an infinite product of rational Eilernberg- MacLane space P^Y\K(0,kr) ril ♦ These results which are found in a paper by Weinberger [8] extend earlier well-known results of Chichilnisky and Heal [3]. | en_US |
