Abstract
In traditional African Society, women were not seen as part of the public arena and were therefore excluded from the decision-making process. Their role was largely restricted to farming, trading, raising children, providing social support to family members and doing housework. Nowadays women are making great strides in all spheres of life. Unfortunately, their representation dwindles disturbingly at the top levels of the achievement pyramid. For instance, the statistics on female achievement show that roughly only 10 percent of the top positions in any field are held by women. This study therefore seeks to out the underlying factors for the low representation of women in top executive management positions of banking and financial institutions.
