Abstract
There continues to be many wrong perceptions about women in leadership roles in
organizations which prevent them from achieving other higher positions. These
obstacles and challenges which women often face include glass ceiling, stereotyping,
equality challenges and life-style challenges. The purpose of this research is to identify
the effects of these challenges in organizations which women encounter every day. The
researcher considered Sekyere Rural Bank for the study to assess how women are
setting themselves to challenges in the positions they occupy. Descriptive and
explanatory research methods were employed in this research to be able to establish the
effects that glass ceiling, stereotyping, equality challenges and leadership roles have on
women who are in leadership roles at Sekyere Rural Bank. The entire population of the
bank who number 166 was assessed in this research with the aid of a structured
questionnaire. The findings of the research revealed information which include the facts
that, despite the challenges that women still face in organizations today they were still
recognized and promoted for hard work, women leaders in organizations such as
Sekyere Rural Bank are able to take critical decisions which are geared towards the
attainment of organizational goals and objectives. The issue of sexism still continues to
play a role in organizations despite the growing need of gender equality globally. This
research contributes to knowledge about women in leadership roles, their contribution
to work, the challenges that they face and the ways that women in leadership roles adopt
to cope with these challenges that they encounter daily in their various respective
organizations.
