Abstract
Appliqué as an artform involving the sewing of cut-out shapes especially of fabric onto the surface of another fabric has been with us for a very long time as reflected in Fante Asafo Flags, umbrellas and palanquins in the traditional setting of Ghana.
The objective of the thesis is to adapt appliqué as a painting technique, drawing inspiration from Ghanaian life and symbolism.
The outcome of the research reveals the potential of the appliqué technique in innovative painting and its enhancement of the royal regalia such as the umbrella, cloth, smock, and palanquin in a new academic environment for appreciation.
