Abstract
The study motivated by low performance of some rural banks which some suspect the high operational cost in the computerization banking system as its cause. The study seeks to examine the effect of computerized banking System on South Birim Rural Bank Limited (SBRB). The study examine whether computerized banking system is effective in delivering banking services and its challenges. Furthermore, it examines the effect of computerized banking system on the performance of South Birim Rural Bank Limited. Primary data was collected with the use of questionnaire and a sample of 100 respondents which includes 30 bank employees and 70 bank customers were interviewed. Secondary data on the performance of South Birim Rural Bank Limited was collected from their audited accounts. The study revealed that computerized banking system in SBRB simplifies work, enables service delivery on time, reduces labour hours, reduces paper work, enables quick response to customer enquiries, reduces waiting time at banking premises and enable easy reconciliation. In achieving all these benefits, there were challenges like high maintenance and part replacement cost, installation cost, software license fees, other service providers cost and network failure. One major aim of banks is to increase profit by ensuring high standard customer satisfaction. The study recommended SBRB to consider cost control measures, effective loan recovery plans and marketing strategies in order to increase profit. It was also recommended that creation of new branches and renovation should also be planned in budgets to avoid fluctuations in profit so as to reduce the high cost to income ratio.
